Term 6 - How many pebbles on the beach?

Oh, I do like to be beside the seaside! How many pebbles on the beach? Which creatures live beside the sea? It’s time to breathe in the salty air and explore the seashore.

 

This half term, we’ll discover the wonders of the seashore, collecting interesting items, bouncing beach balls and building sandcastles in the outdoor area. Back in the classroom, we’ll explore which natural and man-made seashore objects float and which sink, and we’ll learn about the features of crabs, fish, seabirds and starfish which we will use to write and draw fact files. In our literacy lessons, we’ll look at a range of seaside-themed books, songs and poems, and practise writing in the sand. Using our mathematical skills, we’ll catch and count plastic fish and sort and count different sea creatures. We’ll also learn to move like a crab, dig for treasure, make boats, create paper plate sea creatures, set up an ice cream shop and use our imaginations to put beach pebbles to good use. What will we create?

At the end of the project, we’ll create our own beach to explore using sand and water pools. 

 

Help your child prepare for their project
Feel smooth pebbles and soggy sand beneath your feet! Why not visit a nearby beach together, take a stroll along the shore, explore rock pools and treat yourselves to some fish and chips? Yum! Alternatively, create a mini beach in your garden by pouring sand and water into different containers. Perhaps you could add some pebbles and shells to the sand. What happens as the sand gets wet? You could also use coloured sand to fill glass jars or bottles with vibrant layers and patterns.
