Key Stage One and Two

Teachers use the White Rose overviews and these include mathematical concepts covered through White Rose and NCETM’s Maths Mastery resources. In order to provide progressive challenge we also use mastery questions from Classroom Secrets. These overviews are used to plan weekly lessons ensuring there are sufficient opportunities to work on an area in depth through. We also use our vocabulary progression map when planning to ensure the appropriate language is being modelled and taught to help support our children’s reasoning skills. The termly overviews show the objectives from each block which derive from the National curriculum. These are broken down into carefully planned small steps which are designed to develop children’s understanding. Each small step is broken down into fluency, reasoning and problem solving. Children are taught in their class five days a week for one hour a day. They use a range of manipulatives (cubes, number lines, buttons, number grids etc.) to solve a range of problems. Children are encouraged to explain their reasoning to a group or the class about how they solved specific problems. They use ICT to explore the mathematic topics.
