Our teachers love teaching Year 1. Year 1 at our school is carefully planned to help children make a happy and confident transition from the Early Years Foundation Stage into Key Stage 1. At Springhead Park Primary School, we provide exciting and memorable experiences that inspire curiosity and develop a love of learning. These include educational visits, special events, practical activities and opportunities to explore learning beyond the classroom.

Throughout the year, our English lessons build strong foundations in phonics, reading and writing. Children learn to form letters correctly, develop their spelling and use capital letters, finger spaces and full stops. They are encouraged to write simple sentences independently and to share their ideas with growing confidence.

Our class texts are carefully chosen to introduce children to a wide range of stories, poems and non-fiction books. We select engaging texts that children will enjoy, using them to inspire discussion, imaginative activities and writing during our English lessons.

Useful information:

Reading

Remember to bring your reading record and reading books in every day. We will read with the children frequently and reading records will be checked once a week. Please make sure you are reading at home every day for 15 minutes.  Each child will also have a log in for Oxford Owl to access more reading books online. You can read to anyone in your household including your pet as long as it has been signed by an adult to acknowledge you have read. Reading must be recorded in the reading record. Children will be responsible for handing in and collecting their reading record each day in the reading trays so that it can be checked. The children independently change their books in the library. 

Number

It is important that you practise your times tables and number bonds on Numbots for 10 minutes each day at home. You can do this by logging onto your accounts. Your logins are in your Reading Records.

Spelling

The spellings that the children will be tested on for the term are sent home and will be split into weeks so that you know which ones your child will be tested on each week. You will need to spend the week practising to spell those words, using the strategies which the children will learn in class. We will have a spelling quiz every Friday and the scores will be written in their reading records to take home and show an adult after each quiz. Spelling Shed is also a great way to practise -  5 games a week.
