We love learning and exploring in Hedgehog Class. Our curriculum is carefully planned to support children as they develop their confidence, independence and curiosity, while providing lots of opportunities to learn through play, hand-on experiences and exciting activities. 

Throughout the year, we explore a range of engaging topics including About Me, Celebrations, Traditional Tales, Animals, Growing and At the Seaside. These themes provide lots of opportunities for children to develop their knowledge and understanding of the world, while also supporting their communication, language, literacy, maths, physical development and creativity. 

We believe that some of the best learning happens through real life experiences. During our Growing topic, for example, the children enjoy watching caterpillars change into butterflies and take care of vegetable, flowers and herbs in our nursery garden. We also extend our learning beyond the classroom with special experiences such as our beach trip to Joss Bay, where children can explore the seaside environment, investigate rock pools and enjoy learning outdoors. 

Our learning is also enriched through stories, music, creative activities and whole-school experiences. Children take part in events such as Arts Week, Sports Day and our Christmas sing-a-long, where they have the exciting opportunity to perform in front of their families. At the end of the Nursery year, our children celebrate their achievements at their Graduation, performing on the big stage, which is a very special moment for the children, staff and families.

Our typical day

Tapestry, Newsletter and Reading Books 

We use the programme 'Tapestry' to share the children's learning and achievements in school. Through this platform, you can access your child's journal and contribute by sharing activities they engage in outside of school. This could include photos, videos, your child's early writing attempts, or any other moments you'd like to share. 

Every Friday, we will send a newsletter to your email with important updates, details of upcoming events, and photos of our weekly learning. The newsletter will also include information about the topics we will be covering following week. 

Your child will receive a school book every Friday. Please read and explore it with them, then return it to the class team member by Wednesday. 

Stay and Play Sessions

We value the important role that parents and families play in their child's learning . Throughout the year, parents are invited to join us for termly Stay and Play sessions, giving them the opportunity to spend time in the Hedgehog class, explore the children's learning environment and share in their experiences. 

Other Information 

• Please provide a spare set of clothes for your child which can stay in Nursery on their peg. 
• We go out in all weathers in Nursery and encourage messy play therefore children should have named wellies and coats to wear for water and messy play outside. 
• Please can we ask that children do not bring their own toys into class, if they want to bring something to school to settle them, please ensure that you take it home with you, so it stays safe and doesn't get broken or lost. 
• We want your child to settle quickly and enjoy their time at Springhead Park Primary School. Please let us know of any concerns or questions you may have to help us do this.
