Our teachers love teaching Year 2. Year 2 at our school is an exciting and important year as our children continue to develop their independence, confidence and love of learning. At Springhead Park, we love to provide our Year 2 children with a wide range of memorable experiences that bring their learning to life, including educational trips, special visitors, themed days and exciting opportunities to celebrate their achievements throughout the year.

Throughout the year, our English focus is on developing the skills the children have learnt in Year 1, including spelling, punctuation and grammar, while encouraging them to write with increasing independence and confidence. We support our children to develop their vocabulary, sentence structure and creativity, helping them to become enthusiastic readers and confident writers.

Our class texts are carefully selected and sequenced to expose the children to a wide range of engaging and inspiring stories, poems and non-fiction texts. We love choosing books that capture our children's imagination and provide opportunities for them to explore new vocabulary, develop their comprehension skills and inspire their own writing. Where possible, our English learning is linked to our wider curriculum topics, allowing children to make meaningful connections between their learning.

Throughout Year 2, we also encourage our children to become increasingly independent learners, developing their problem-solving skills, curiosity and resilience. Our broad and balanced curriculum provides opportunities for children to explore, investigate and ask questions, ensuring they are well prepared for the next stage of their learning.

Useful information: 

Spelling quizzes will be on a Friday.

PE will be on Tuesday and Thursday. You need to come into school in the correct PE kit. 

Remember to bring your reading record and reading books in every day. We will read with the children frequently and reading records will be checked once a week. Please make sure you are reading at home every day. 

Home Learning

Children will be expected to complete their home learning each week. Home learning consists of:

Reading

Daily reading for at least 15 minutes. You can read to anyone in your household including your pet as long as it has been signed by an adult to acknowledge you have read. Reading must be recorded in the reading record. Children will be responsible for handing in and collecting their reading record each day in the reading trays so that it can be checked. The children independently change their books in the library. 

Number

It is important that you practise your times tables and number bonds on Numbots for 10 minutes each day at home. You can do this by logging onto your accounts. Your logins are in your Reading Records.

Spelling

The spellings that the children will be tested on for the term are sent home and will be split into weeks so that you know which ones your child will be tested on each week. You will need to spend the week practising to spell those words, using the strategies which the children will learn in class. We will have a spelling quiz every Friday and the scores will be written in their reading records to take home and show an adult after each quiz. Spelling Shed is also a great way to practise -  5 games a week.

Termly Projects

Each term, a creative project grid will be assigned to you. This grid will contain a range of creative tasks linked to our termly topic. You will need to complete at least one of these projects per term. If you would like to do more, then please feel free. These can be handed in as and when they are completed. We will have opportunities to share our creations with the class and the children will receive Dojo points for completed home learning. You can hand in your termly project in person to a class adult or send pictures to the office email address.
