Term 4 - Growing

Our topic in term four is 'Growing'. In the this project, your child will learn about how plants, people and animals grow, and what environmental and personal factors affect growth. We will plant, grow and care for our own plants in our garden, and explore what we need to do help them grow big and strong. We will look at our own baby pictures, and explore some key stages that children progress through in order to grow into adults. We will learn about how to live a healthy lifestyle, using the Eatwell plate to understand how to maintain a healthy diet to support our personal growth. Later on in the term, we will have our very own caterpillars, which we will care for and watch how they grow in to beautiful butterflies! At the end of the term, we will learn about Easter, and how the Spring season is one which nurtures and celebrates growth in our environment. Throughout all of this, we will create beautiful pieces of art which demonstrate our understanding of growth, using both our creative and mathematic skills to support us, and create our very own zig-zag books, retelling some of the amazing stories we will read throughout the term.

Throughout this topic, we are supporting children in understanding how they can support and nurture growth, both for themselves and within their own environment. We also teaching children to care for and support plants and animals to grow, whilst understanding the importance of exercise and a healthy diet for human growth. The values of autonomy and personal respect that the children learnt about in their 'People Who Help Us' topic will support their deep understanding of these concepts. Furthermore, children will be able to make meaningful links to their learning from the 'All About Me', exploring their physical and emotional growth from the beginning of the academic year and now.

Supporting your child at home

  • Share and discuss how they have grown physically and emotionally since birth. We'd love to see some baby pictures on Tapestry so we can use these are starters for discussions in class!
  • Plant some seeds with your children at home, and help them to take responsibility for watering and caring for them.
  • Allow children to help with caring for and feeding pets, explaining why it is important to feed them certain foods, and take them on walks and allow them to exercise.
  • Encourage children to make active decisions regarding meal times, and help them to understand whether their choices are healthy or unhealthy, and why.
